A - 600cc+ Motorcycle Licence DAS PDF Print E-mail

Direct Access Scheme (DAS)

The Direct Access Scheme Category A Motorcycle licence was introduced in 1997. The scheme allows riders over the age of 24 to train and apply for the "big bike" test therefore missing out the progressive two year restrictions, applied when passing the test on either a Cat A1 (125cc up to 14.9bhp 11kw) or Cat A2 (up to 47bhp 35kw) bike.

So that learners aged 24 or over may practice for the big bike motorcycle test, they may ride any motorcycle on the road, which exceeds the UK learner specification but only when accompanied by an approved DAS motorcycle instructor.

From 19/1/2013 the big bike test may be taken by riders through progressive access from age 21, along with riders over 24 on the DAS scheme. The test has to be completed on a motorcycle of at least, 595cc 40kW 53.3bhp

When this test is passed the rider can immediately ride any size motorcycle without learner restrictions.
